Editor's Choice 2007 - An annual guide to photography's
best new products.
by American PHOTO Staff
The online auction phenomenon has created an explosion of
tabletop product photography systems. Many of these all-in-one solutions
-- lighting hardware plus backdrop -- often resort to cheap fixtures
mounted on flimsy telescoping or goose-neck arms that tend to break. The
simpler backdrop-only systems, while small enough to be considered truly
portable, often have no carrying cases, so they really aren't. Of these,
we've encountered backgrounds that are easily scratched, or even
cracked, or that have sweep surfaces which yellow prematurely.
The Sharpics D-Flector product photography system seems
to have been conceived with more attention to both convenience and
functionality. Essentially a background built into an oversized attache
case, it features a top-mounted handle and non-skid feet, and is
available in three sizes ranging from 18 to 30 inches wide. Open the
case and, if you're shooting by available light, you're ready to go.
There's nothing to unpack, thread together, or plug in.
The D-Flector's durable white seamless background
material, which is designed to be smudge-resistant and easy to clean, is
coated with a light-reflecting substance similar to what's used on
projection screens. This extra reflectance creates a lighter background
than you can get with white seamless paper or even backlit plexiglass.
The result is that your subject has a clean, silhouetted appearance
ideal for eBay or other marketing venues. July/August 2007 |

STRIKE IT RICH -
Great product to jump start your business.
It is effortless
to set up, convenient to carry, resembling a briefcase and
easy to store. It can be used on any tabletop or desk. Open
the D-Flector, put the object to be photographed on the
reflective material, set up a digital camera on a monopod
and check the settings. Make sure to shoot the item at a
30-degree angle. Aim and take the picture. The state of the
art reflective background and flash create a bright white
background. Objects appear to be floating on air. Other
white materials leave a grayish tone.
Product
photography is providing new opportunities to all digital
camera users. The possibilities are endless. It is now easy
to take pictures of favorite heirlooms, or other items for
scrapbooking, appraisals, interior decorating, online

Get Your Whites Whiter
Get the gray out of tabletop product shots
with the D-Flector, a portable studio for product photography. The
D-Flector provides a 24-inch-by-35-inch seamless backdrop that closes
into a manageable 25-inch-by-18-inch briefcase. The highly
reflective white background is reinforced with a polymer substrate
that's activated with a strobe or flash, preventing the grayish cast in
most white backgrounds. When you're finished shooting for a client
project, use the $129.99 D-Flector (Model DF-240) to give your eBay
auctions a professional flair.

D-Flector Portable Studio
Sharpics created what may prove to be a necessity
for product photographers: a hard case that opens up to reveal an
interior made of reflective white material. Place an object on it and
take your picture (especially with a flash); it’s easy to get clean
white backgrounds, and to transport them with you.

CLEAN SWEEP
Getting a clean, seamless white background in product photography is
much more difficult than it seems. Especially if you don't own fancy
studio lights. Thankfully, the D-Flector from Sharpics ($130 direct),
makes it easy. Closed, it looks like a large briefcase. But open, it
becomes a seamless background about 24 inches wide and 18 inches deep,
large enough for medium and small sized products. The background
material is made of tough, extremely reflective plastic. We were able to
make pleasing product shots using only an electronic viewfinder camera
and its built-in flash. What more could an eBay power seller ask for?

SMART, SIMPLE & EFFECTIVE
You gotta love its simplicity! The D-Flector from
Sharpics is one of those unique products with an uncommon combination of
functionality, clean design, and affordability. Essentially a white
seamless background inside an attractive hardwood portfolio case, the
easy-to-carry D-Flector is ideal for shooting small objects. Simply
place the case on a table or desk, open it up, position your subject on
the 24x35" background, and shoot away. Besides the D-Flector, all you
really need to create great product photos is your camera, a flash unit
and a tripod or other form of camera support.
The seamless background is made of a
highly-reflective easy-to-clean material that "activates" when
photographed with a flash or studio strobe, resulting in a bright white
appearance. This "portable studio" retails for only $129 (a good price
for the outer case itself), and features four non-skid feet,
chrome-plated latches, and a sturdy lid support that locks into place at
a precise 90°
angle. The background material is reinforced with a polymer substrate
for added durability.

PRO REVIEW: Sharpics D-Flector
Desktop studio makes product photography portable, easy
By Joan T.
Sherwood
Product photography can be a teeth-grinding, painstaking
process. The D-Flector from Sharpics makes it so quick and
easy it's scary.
The
D-Flector is a reflective white background that folds (no
crease) neatly into a lightweight wooden case. Open the
case, lock the supports (simple hinges), and you've got a
seamless background desktop studio. The photographic area is
24x35 inches and the outside dimensions of the case are
25x18x2 inches. It's so lightweight that I easily toted the
case, along with everything else I usually carry to work,
onto the train and for a one-mile walk from the station to
my home. Sharpics says the photographic surface is easy to
clean with a damp cloth, but I didn't get it dirty enough to
test that claim. It certainly looks and feels robust.
